Le réalisateur Kym Staton évoque son travail sur un récent documentaire consacré à la persécution pernicieuse du journaliste australien & aux répercussions sur la liberté de la presse & la démocratie.
I'm supporting Julian Assange since many years, and I met Kym 1,5 years ago in London for Assange's birthday - Kym is a super guy. Thank you for your interview Jana
He is indeed! I was in London last year for the Human Chain event and I think The Trust Fall team was there to shoot for the film. Thank YOU, as well for your activism! I hope this nightmare will soon be over for Assange and his family, it's truly mindboggling what these governments are doing so we all need to resist.
I was also in London on October 8, and in Belmarsh, and other events for Assange (I live in France). Yes, The Trust Fall was there, so maybe we saw each other! Honestly, I don't believe much in a happy ending - releasing him would mean, for the USA, that Assange's revelations were right - and that they're just ripe for the Hague tribunal. Same thing for Israel: the UN, which is nothing but the good conscience of the West, can't even impose a ceasefire, even though the veto should be overridden in the case of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. And the pseudo-democracies watch, enjoying their Christmas turkey while Israel kills, tortures, exterminates. It's mind-boggling. And what about the Arab countries. The ghosts of the children killed don't even keep them awake. It's sickening. But still believing in "Existence, resilience" ;)
You're absolutely right! At this point I think we just need to surround Belmarsh and not go away until Assange is released. You know, I agree that a happy ending isn't likely, but even if they release him, they will never face Hague tribunals or anything remotely resembling justice, it's the way this wicked world works. And even if they do set him free at last, what kind of state is he going to be in - that's not too hard to guess, as Stefania Maurizi argues in her book, they've already ruined him.
As for the war crimes Israel has been conducting in Gaza for decades under the whole world's silent watch, these bastards will never face justice, either. No matter how much we protest and march for peace. I know I shouldn't probably say this but peaceful protests won't cut it anymore.
I was thinking exactly the same thing you're mentioning - people are so joyous that it's Christmas, so removed from reality, not taking any note of the horrific crimes that are happening around us.
I agree, I agree, I agree - we're facing the big problem directly linked to human nature: dominants dominated, money and power.... as we say in French, "we're sawing off the branch we're sitting on" or "we're shooting ourselves in the foot". In the race for profit and power, we lose our humanity. Otherwise, in the space of a few centuries, we would have been able to put in place systems of respect for rights that condemn war criminals and others without any possible loopholes. When we see Biden's declarations on democracy and freedom of expression, while at the same time imprisoning a journalist and editor, delivering hundreds of tons of weapons that kill tens of thousands of children and letting a butcher exterminate a population, we should have understood everything. But as we are irreducible " skinned alive " rebels, we keep on trying to propagate ideas of humanity ;) You, me, and fortunately a few others...
Keep fighting, however and whenever we can! I'm slowly accepting the sad truth that the world probably wasn't meant to be a just place to begin with. But I'm sure there will always be good, honest, courageous people who won't keep silent, who will resist this corrosive system regardless of the cost, and continue to give a bright example to the rest of us.
Thank you so much for highlighting this interview and taking the time to translate it for your readers.
